Hollywood shed purple tears as news broke Thursday of Prince’s passing.

The iconic musician died at his Paisley Park estate in his native Minnesota at the age of 57, and actors, singers, models and more stars across generations shared their grief on social media.

“This is what it sounds like when doves cry,” Whoopi Goldberg tweeted, quoting the lead single from the funk legend’s 1984 album Purple Rain.

Justin Timberlake posted a lengthy message remembering how he became inspired by Raspberry Beret at just 4 years old.

“They say don’t meet your idols… That they let you down. But, some of my greatest, funniest(yes, he was hilarious), and most prolific encounters and conversations about music came from the moments that I spent with him,” he wrote. “It would be silly to say that he has inspired our music… It’s beyond that. He’s somewhere within every song I’ve ever written. I am sad, but I will smile when I think of every second that I had the fortune of being in his company. We have lost our greatest living musician. But his music will never die.”

Meanwhile, director and choreographer Adam Shankman recalled appearing as an extra in the movie Purple Rain.

“His genius made me whole,” he tweeted.

Jada Pinkett Smith also spoke of Prince’s influence on her career, tweeting, “Prince was one of the first artists to put me on game in regard to the industry. He was not only a genius artist, he was kind, funny, beautifully eccentric, curious, imaginative, magical, spiritual, rebellious and extremely intelligent. He showed me early the power of living one’s life by one’s own rules and no one else’s. There are really no words to express what we have all lost today. To quote my friend Paress, ‘Music has lost its heart beat.’ Rest in peace Beauty.”

And close friend Lenny Kravitz called Prince his “musical brother” on Instagram.

“The one who showed me the possibilities within myself, changed everything, and kept his integrity until the end, is gone,” he said. “I am heartbroken.”
