Sheryl Crow has a deep respect for the music of Johnny Cash, but she actually got to know the American music icon through his wife, June Carter Cash. In 1999, June asked Crow to join her for several hours on Vin Scelsa’s Idiot’s Delight radio show. The friendship blossomed from there, and Crow went on to record with the couple over the years.

On an episode of Layin’ It Down with Steve Jordan on VOLUME (Ch. 106), Crow reminisces about the day she sang at June’s funeral, at the request of Johnny.

“As soon as I stepped out to start singing, I saw Johnny being helped to the casket, and him just drape himself across her casket,” Crowe recalled.

She went on to talk about that day and how saying goodbye to her friend and hero affected her.

“It was just one of those moments where I forgot that I’m from a tiny town, and my heroes are passing, and I’m being asked to honor them.”
