Had the game been played under even semi-normal conditions, it would have been considered pretty wild.

Add steady the lake-effect storm that blanketed New Era Field with about eight inches of snow throughout, and you have the makings of something that even a long-time veteran such as Buffalo Bills guard Richie Incognito never experienced.

‘I’ll never forget that’

“It was epic,” Incognito said of the Bills’ 13-7 overtime victory against the Indianapolis Colts while appearing with Bruce Murray and Brady Quinn on the SiriusXM Blitz. “I’ll never forget that.”

The Bills nearly lost the game twice late in regulation when the Colts scored a touchdown and converted a two-point conversion that was nullified by an offensive pass-interference penalty. That put the game in a 7-7 tie.

‘We didn’t get any sort of heads-up with the forecast or anything going into this game’

After that, third-string quarterback Joe Webb threw an interception in Bills territory setting up a field-goal attempt that Adam Vinatieri missed from 43 yards. In OT, the Bills punted on fourth-and-1 from the Indianapolis 41, but the Colts punted it back and the Bills won on LeSean McCoy’s 21-yard touchdown run.

“It was nuts,” Incognito said. “We didn’t get any sort of heads-up with the forecast or anything going into this game. We knew it was going to be a little breezy, but showed up at the stadium, it wasn’t snowing as hard as it was (later). And by the time we went out for pregame warmups, it’s dumping snow, twenty-mile-an-hour winds, some wind gusts into the 30s. For most of the field, it was ankle-deep. At some parts, it was knee-deep. It was nuts.

‘You’re slipping and sliding, all your technique goes out the window’

“The thing is, is you have no footing. You’re slipping and sliding, all your technique goes out the window. You’re out there doing wrestling moves on defensive linemen. They don’t have any footing. The harder they try and run, the more they’re slipping, so pass-rush downs, they’re slipping all over the ground, we’re able to grab them up. On run downs, we’re the runs trying to get a little horse power going and they’re flinging us around, making tackles. It really is just kind of a battle of wills. Who’s going to tough it out, who’s going to stick together?

“And we did that and got the win in overtime.”
