A second night of protests broke out in Charlotte, North Carolina on Wednesday in response to the fatal police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott. The night turned chaotic and violent with authorities firing tear gas into the crowd of protesters. One man was gravely injured during the demonstration and is currently on life support. Authorities initially reported that the individual had been killed in the unrest.

“It looks like what happened in Charlotte, the day before yesterday, was unnecessary,” North Carolina Rep. G. K. Butterfield told Joe Madison Thursday, referring to the initial police shooting. “It was an overreaction by the police, which is happening all across the country.”

“Police officers need to be taught that you shoot as a last resort.”

Butterfield added, “You just don’t pull out a gun and start killing people any time there is a police situation. But that’s what police officers are doing. They’re shooting first, asking questions later.”

“Bad police officers must go,” Butterfield concluded. “They must leave the police force. If they’ve committed crimes, they must go to jail.”
