“Not My Fault” with Megan Thee Stallion

In addition to portraying Leighton Murray in The Sex Lives of College Girls, Reneé starred as Regina George in the Broadway musical Mean Girls — which is now being adapted into a film, also starring Reneé as Regina. She teamed up with Megan Thee Stallion on the song “Not My Fault,” which dropped last Friday for the Mean Girls official soundtrack.

“Meg was like, ‘Mean Girls is my favorite thing, I have to do this,'” Reneé told the Morning Mash Up.

Describing Megan The Stallion as “the hardest worker [she’s] ever met in [her] life,” Reneé explained that they’re both “pretty choosey” about their company and their time, but they were eager to work together.

“[Meg]’s just somebody who I’m such a big fan of and have been for a really long time,” she continued. “She was making mix tapes and doing music videos on the top level of a parking garage in booty shorts and a little tan tank top, and I was like, ‘She’s perfect. She’s amazing. She’s gonna change the game.’ Yeah, I’m obsessed with her.”

Acting vs. Singing

Despite her colossal success as both a Broadway and a film actress, Reneé admitted that her true passion is music; she did all that on-stage and on-screen work with the goal of one day getting her foot in the door of the music industry.

“It’s definitely been nice, because I feel like I’ve gotten to be in spaces that I didn’t really think that I would but that have definitely served, like, ultimately what I want to do,” she said. “But it’s also kind of taught me that I do like acting. I just didn’t think that was something that was a skill of mine, let alone something that would come along that early in my career, which was really nice.”

Reneé released the EP Everything to Everyone in 2022, followed by Snow Angel in 2023. In April of last year, she got to see Frank Ocean — one of her personal favorite artists and biggest inspirations — perform live at Coachella, a moment she described to the Morning Mash Up as a “holy ceremony.”

“It was genuinely [the] best day of my life. I never understood stan culture until then, and I was crying the whole time. It healed a lot of things in my life, which sounds so silly, but once you experience it with someone like that, you actually believe it,” Reneé explained.

She added, “To me, like, I have Frank Ocean and artists like that, and I cannot imagine someone feeling that same way about me. Genuinely cannot imagine.”

‘Mean Girls’ Movie

The new Mean Girls movie is based on a screenplay by Tina Fey (which is based on the Broadway musical of the same name that Reneé starred in, which is based on Tina Fey’s screenplay for the original 2004 Mean Girls film, which is based on Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book, Queen Bees and Wannabes).

“She’s the coolest,” Reneé said of working so closely with Tina on the play and the movie. “I think also she, ever since I was kid, has always created an environment that doesn’t feel like pressure and doesn’t feel like this intense, scary kind of place. If she’s trusting you with something, she actually trusts you. She doesn’t lie … She’s such a homie.”

Mean Girls officially hits theaters on January 12.
