President Biden’s age

With President Biden’s age coming under greater scrutiny as the election draws closer, “many voters will be watching more closely, and his performance will be parsed for any signs that the 81-year-old President is slipping,” Brian Bennett and Nik Popli wrote for Time.

Born in 1946, former President Donald Trump will be 78 on voting day.

The war in Gaza

Although President Biden and Vice President Harris have already begun publicly calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, many — including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — believe addressing the situation during the State of the Union would help strengthen the message to both Congress and Israel.

“I will not let up pushing for a deal that secures the release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas, brings an immediate ceasefire to Gaza for at least six weeks, and allows for a surge of aid to the entire Gaza Strip,” the president posted on X on March 4.

Border control

The Senate’s bipartisan border bill crafted by Sens. James Lankford, Chris Murphy, and Kyrsten Sinema — which included the addition of 1,500 new Customs and Border Protection personnel, 4,300 Asylum Officers, 100 immigration judges, 100 drug inspection machines, and 10,000 detention beds — was effectively killed by Republican opposition in early February, despite illegal immigration being one of the party’s key issues.

Rep. Henry Cuellar, who represents the 28th Congressional District of Texas, much of which shares its border with Mexico, said in a post on X on February 3: “The Bipartisan Senate Border Bill is a good deal that would provide crucial relief to border communities as we face a crisis. Unfortunately, the bill that would secure the border is stuck in Congress with no plans for a vote. We need solutions at the border – not politics.”

The upcoming State of the Union address gives President Biden another chance to speak to Congress about their blocking of this bill and how that effectively bolsters Trump’s reelection campaign.

Abortion and IVF

After abortion access restrictions increased following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, Alabama recently took things further when the state’s Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are people. This brought the legality of in vitro fertilization (IVF) into question, scaring IVF facilities into pausing their embryo freezing practices for people trying to conceive.

Many pro-life Republicans, including Trump, have spoken out against Alabama’s decision. Data from Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway, used in a memo shared recently by Jason Thielman, Executive Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, show that 85 percent of Americans, 78 percent of abortion opponents, and 83 percent of evangelicals support IVF.

Voters will want to hear President Biden speak about these far-right-leaning Supreme Court decisions happening under his presidency.
