Hip-hop and contemporary R&B grew rampantly popular and began incorporating other genres like soul, funk, jazz and reggae together, resulting in fusion sub-genres. Rock continued in popularity with the emergence of grunge, Britpop, industrial rock, punk, ska punk, nu metal and other alternative rock music. In the electronic realm, house and techno became increasingly popular and sparked the emergence of other electronic dance music genres like trance, drum and bass and trip hop. The decade was also responsible for the rise of contemporary country music as a major genre. Although many artists from the ‘90s went on to create timeless hit after hit, a few artists only saw their place at the top of the charts but once.
