One To Watch: Broadway newcomer Micah Stock talks It’s Only A Play on OutQ

If you haven’t yet heard of Micah Stock, you will. The 25-year-old is currently making his Broadway debut at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in Terrence McNally’s uproarious satire, It’s Only A Play. But this isn’t just any first gig for Stock. His cast mates include Broadway royalty like Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Megan Mullally, and Stockard Channing. F. Murray Abraham and Rupert Grint (aka Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter films) also take the stage with Stock. Stock may have graciously told OutQ‘s Keith Price that the experience is like taking a master class; however, the Ohio native steals the show in his own right.

It’s Only A Play takes place at an opening night soiree for Peter Austin’s (Matthew Broderick) new play, The Golden Egg. Nathan Lane hams it up (as per usual) as his egotistical frenemy, who secretly hopes the reviews for it flop. Add a drugged out Stockard Channing as the leading lady, Megan Mullally as the wealthy airhead producer, and Rupert Grint as the batsh-t British director, and you’ve got a comedic carousel ride. Dozens of pop culture references and parodies make even first-time theatre goers laugh out loud. And of course, Micah Stock plays the fabulous fly on the wall Gus, the coat check guy spending his first night in Manhattan with these worthy fools. But as he grabs laughs from the likes of Nathan Lane and steals scenes from an all-star cast, audience members will quickly learn this is not Stock’s first time at the rodeo. And it certainly won’t be his last stint on Broadway.

“I’ve probably gone on over 250 auditions, and I’ve probably booked six or seven of them. And that’s probably a pretty good rate. And that’s amazing. If I only went on 50 of those, I might not have even got one. Statistically, you just have to keep going,” Stock said. “There are so many people who would want to do this. [Realizing that] is re-energizing … This is the first year that I have been able to make my living solely as an actor.”
