Octane (Ch. 37) unveiled another World Premiere on Tuesday morning at 9 am ET from Pop Evil’s forthcoming album, Up, due out on August 21. After premiering the single In Disarray, Octane shared a second song from the album, Dead in the Water, which you can hear exclusively on Octane until Friday, when it becomes commercially available.

Lead singer Leigh Kakaty spoke to Octane about the song, noting that it came together late in the writing process and was built around one of Dave Grah’s guitar riffs.

“He must’ve played this [riff] for over a year,” Kakaty explained. “Every time he played it, I was always kind of curious [and thought], ‘Wow, you know, we should do something with that and see if something can come out of that riff.’”

He went on to say that he didn’t initially know the lyrical direction he wanted to take.

“I know the guys had the music really dialed in, and I just didn’t know lyrically where I wanted to take this song. …Whether it’s where rock is in this transitional state or whether it’s where my personal life’s been, I’ve always felt like … everything’s kind of crashing in or sinking in around me. …I’ve always felt like you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t, so Dead in the Water kind of was born from that concept.”

In case you missed it this time around, you can hear Dead in the Water on Octane all week!
