As a candidate in New York’s mayoral race, Bill Thompson is happy to talk about education, affordable housing and jobs. What he doesn’t want to talk about is Anthony Weiner.

The former city comptroller told Michelangelo Signorile on SiriusXM Progress why he’s so fed up with constant coverage of the former congressman’s scandals, and where he thinks New York should be headed in the next mayor’s term.

“Weiner being in this race right now has shifted the focus away from the future of the city of New York into things we really don’t want to talk about,” Thompson said. “He has created that distraction.”

Thompson, who first ran against Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2009, emphasized affordable housing and education as the issues that should be talked about in this campaign, and he said he would use the mayor’s “national bully pulpit” to highlight other causes, such as rights for the LGBTQ community.
