For the first time since Nov. 3, a team other than the Golden State Warriors has the honor of the top spot in the NBA Today Rankings.

The Hawks have been great for a while now (33-2 since Thanksgiving), but it appeared that the voters weren’t ready to give them the top spot until Golden State stumbled. That opening finally arrived for the Hawks this week as the Warriors dropped two disappointing games. It didn’t seem like the voters struggled with the decision to put the Hawks No. 1 this week, with all voters unanimously giving them the top spot. However, next week the decision might be even easier after we get to watch these two teams face off this Friday for their first match-up of the season.

#WeTheNorth going north

The Raptors were the biggest risers in the rankings this week. Toronto entered 2015 as the sixth ranked team, but slowly fell each week dropping all the way to No. 14 last week. One impressive 4-0 week though and our analysts were right back on the Raptors bandwagon. Although the Raptors only played one team in the top half of our rankings, they did win three of those games on the road.

Stuck in the middle with you

For two months, the Bucks and Pelicans have represented mediocrity to our voters. Those two teams have both been in the narrow 14-16 range every week since Dec. 8. The teams have identical 25-22 records, and despite their best efforts, neither team can make a push toward the top 10.

Both teams had reason to move up this week, with the Bucks going 3-0, including a win over the No. 9 Blazers. The Pelicans went 2-1 with an impressive win over the No. 4 Clippers, despite Anthony Davis missing the game due to injury.

Despite their similar standing within the larger NBA, they are in quite different places within their conferences. While the Bucks aren’t considered contenders in the East, they are at least safely in the playoffs. The Pelicans, on the other hand, sit two games back of the No. 8 seed in the West with the dangerous Thunder breathing down their necks at No. 9.
