This week the BBWAA handed out their end of season awards and MLB Network Radio brought you closer to the winners.

Manager of the Year

The Pittsburgh Pirates were the feel good story of the year, securing their first winning season and post-season trip since 1992, and on Monday, manager Clint Hurdle earned his first Manager of the Year award. He joined MLB Roundtrip and talked about which of his former managers influenced his career the most.

“Basically my years with Davey Johnson and Whitey Herzog toward the end (of my playing career) when I was backing up a number of positions, learning new positions. But I’ve learned something from every guy.”

Monday night, Hurdle also talked to Jeff Joyce and Mel Antonen about his All Star centerfielder Andrew McCutchen and the electricity he brings to the ballpark every day. By Thursday night, McCutchen was awarded his first MVP award (the first for a Pirates since Barry Bonds in 1992).

McCutchen joined Mike Stanton and Jeff Joyce after the announcement and compared the night to when he first became a Pittsburgh Pirate in 2005.

“When they announced it, it was a breath of fresh air. It was relief and it was so many emotions. It almost felt like when I first got drafted. One of those feelings of just being in awe and overwhelmed with joy. I’m still smiling from ear to ear.”

Cy Young

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw won his second National League Cy Young award in the last three years. The award came after leading all of baseball in ERA (1.83), and WHIP (0.92). He also led the NL with 292 strikeouts.

Despite winning the award before, Kershaw told Casey Stern and Jim Bowden on Inside Pitch that the announcement was still special.

“Whether you expect to win or not, it’s still pretty special when you hear your name called. The other two candidates, (Adam) Wainwright and (Jose) Fernandez obviously had great years too so you do really never know till they say your name […] Never in a million years do you think you’ll win a Cy Young award and to get to be associated with that and the names that go along with that it’s pretty special.”
