The countdown to Christmas has commenced, but lucky for us, our gift came early, courtesy of Loretta Lynn. The country icon treated us to an intimate acoustic performance and insights from her colorful life in a special subscriber event hosted by Outlaw Country’s Elizabeth Cook at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, TN. The exclusive show will be broadcast on Willie’s Roadhouse (Ch. 59) and Country Christmas (Ch. 58) on Friday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. ET with later airings on Outlaw Country (Ch. 60).

Lynn released her first Christmas album in 50 years, White Christmas Blue, on Oct. 7. The Country Music Hall of Fame member was accompanied by her co-writer of the title track, Shawn Camp of The Earls of Leicester, as she performed White Christmas Blue, Country Christmas and To Heck with Ol’ Santa Claus. Despite recovering from a recent fall out of bed, her energy radiated throughout the room at her Coal Miner’s Daughter Museum. She shared memories from past holidays, including the story of how her father killed a hog every December for Christmas dinner.

Lynn’s first Christmas album, Country Christmas, was released in 1966. She revealed that she initially wanted to do a religious album in the wake of the death of her good friend and country pop singer Patsy Cline, who died in a plane crash in 1963.

“When I lost Patsy, I went and talked to my producer Owen Bradley and I said, ‘Owen, I want to do a religious album.’ He said, ‘Now, I know how you’re feeling because of Patsy, but you need to think what we need to do next,'” Lynn explained. “I wrote most of the [Country Christmas] album and To Heck With Ol’ Santa Claus, so we did good. And I didn’t do another one until now, as far as Christmas.”

Lynn is longtime friends with Willie’s Roadhouse “proprietor” Willie Nelson and recalled her first interactions with him.

“We would work together and Willie, back in them days, he wore suits, beautiful suits. His hair, his eyes, were the same color, he’s a handsome guy. I always watched him to see what he was doing different, he would sing what was out that was big and then he would sing the songs that he wrote, so I thought he was great,” said Lynn, who recorded a duet with Nelson on “Lay Me Down” off her other 2016 release, Full Circle, that recently received a Grammy nomination for Country Album of the Year.

Lynn, who was diagnosed with glaucoma earlier this year, also told the story about the first time she smoked pot, which also happened to be her last time.

“I took one little (hit) off that thing, it hit me in the chest, and I thought, ‘My god, I’m going to die,'” she said as the audience laughed. “I ain’t smoking any more. I’ll just have to go blind.”

Lynn’s performance will rebroadcast on Willie’s Roadhouse on Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. ET and 7 p.m. ET; Dec. 18 at 8 a.m. ET and 4 p.m. ET; Dec. 20 at 12 p.m. ET; Dec. 22 at 11 p.m. ET; Dec. 24 at 2 p.m. ET; and Dec. 23 at 12 a.m. ET and 8 p.m. ET. It will also re-air on Outlaw Country on Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. ET and 5 p.m. ET; Dec. 18 at 12 p.m. ET, and 9 p.m. ET; Dec. 19 at 9 a.m. ET; and Dec. 21 at 11 a.m. ET. It will replay on Country Christmas on Dec. 16 at 9 p.m. ET; Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. ET; Dec. 18 at 8 a.m. ET; Dec. 22 at 8 p.m. ET; and Dec. 25 at 12 a.m. ET and 2 p.m. ET.
