Landon Collins on Giants’ struggles in 2017: ‘We can’t go through that again’

For safety Landon Collins, one of the discouraging parts of the 2017 season he doesn’t want to see repeated is the acrimony among members of the Giants’ secondary. Collins told Bruce Murray and Phil Savage on the SiriusXM Blitz that steps have been taken among the team’s defensive backs to mend any lingering hard feelings and create cohesion.

There is plenty from the 2017 season that the New York Giants don’t wish to repeat in 2018.

A disastrous, 3-13 finish is at the top of the list, along with a rash of injuries.

‘A lot of us came from winning teams back in college, so we know what we’re capable of’

For safety Landon Collins, another is the acrimony among members of the Giants’ secondary. Collins told Bruce Murray and Phil Savage on the SiriusXM Blitz that steps have been taken among the team’s defensive backs to mend any lingering hard feelings and create cohesion.

“Oh, man, we just all kind of just sat down,” Collins said. “I haven’t had the chance to meet up with every guy, but most of us were training with one of our teammates that we’re going to be with on this team. Just being with each other, being in their ear, being in each other’s ear and just making sure our head is straight and just pushing what happened last year behind us because, I mean, we can’t go through that again. Because we love what we do, we love football and we’re ready to play and we don’t like to lose. A lot of us came from winning teams back in college, so we know what we’re capable of.”

‘Personality wise, (Shurmur’s) a cool guy, he seems very laid back’

The Giants began their offseason workout program Monday. So far, Collins has been impressed with what he has seen of new coach Pat Shurmur.

“I don’t know too much about his coaching style yet, I’ve got to watch him a little bit more,” Collins. “But personality wise, he’s a cool guy, he seems very laid back, all smiles from what I’ve seen so far and just very excited to be here. You see it in his eyes, you see it in his heart and he’s just ready to get to work. He knows he has some great talent in the room and kind of just ready to put it all together and showcase what he can do with a new team as the head coach.”

‘We all worry about our contract and stuff like that and just want a long-term deal and be secure’

Collins said embattled wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., hasn’t given him any indication he is distracted by his uncertain future with the team.

“I talked to him, but I would say none of it’s getting to him,” the safety said. “He’s really just working on himself, getting himself back healthy so if he’s still on the Giant team, just come back for a great season, to prove all the doubters wrong, all his haters wrong and that he still got it. We all worry about our contract and stuff like that and just want a long-term deal and be secure. That’s always in the back of your mind, but at the end of the day we love this game and we just want to play football and do it for a long time.”
