The Denver Broncos named defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio interim coach Monday after learning head coach John Fox’s needs heart surgery. Del Rio’s appointment was a logical choice for the Broncos considering his past experience as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With the Broncos off to an 8-1 start, Del Rio will be challenged with making sure his team stays on track, a task that he discussed on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“We’re on a mission, and we need to stay focused on the goal at hand,” Del Rio said. “We’re going to carry on just like [Fox] would like to have us do and perform.”

Del Rio also gave insight on areas he feels the Broncos need improvement to reach their full potential.

“Defensively, we’ve allowed some explosive pass plays, whether it’s a breakdown in coverage, or a guy getting beat, or whatever it might be, and we need to tighten those things up, and I fully believe we will,” Del Rio said. “I think our best football is yet in front of us.”

Movin’ the Chains airs weekdays at 3 pm ET on SiriusXM NFL Radio, channel 88.
