The champagne hasn’t even dried on the Cleveland Cavaliers after they took down the Golden State Warriors to win an epic NBA Finals. But time waits for no man and with or without LeBron and crew ready for it, the NBA Draft is nearly here. Before Brandon Ingram or Ben Simmons is selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with that No. 1 pick, catch up with NBA Radio’s 1996 NBA Draft Retrospective to relive a draft that pre-2003 (ie: the class of LeBron, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, etc) was considered one of the deepest drafts in league history. Allen Iverson, Marcus Camby, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Stephon Marbury, Ray Allen, Antoine Walker, Kobe Bryant, Peja Stojakovic Steve Nash, Jermaine O’Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas were all selected in the first round of that loaded 1996 class.

Here’s former NBA commissioner David Stern discussing what everyone was thinking about leading up to the Draft (hint, hint: Kobe and The Answer)

Even though he went in the lottery, Ray Allen had such a quiet persona compared with the Iversons and Marburys of the hoops world that it’s almost easy to forget how much he changed the three-pointer (before Steph Curry redefined the game itself with the three-pointer). Listen to him discuss his experiences playing in the Big East and how the off-the-court lessons were just as valuable to him in his NBA career as his sweet stroke was on the court.

Marcus Camby was a timeless big man who had a surprisingly long NBA stint. Heading into the ’96 Draft, Camby was projected to potentially go as the #1 pick overall, in this excerpt her discusses the pressures of being taken, what it means to his family and also what it was like finally playing with Allen Iverson for a few seasons on the Denver Nuggets.
