When superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma walks into the SiriusXM Performance Theatre in Washington, D.C. to play Bach, it will be our party to celebrate his new recording of the Bach Cello Suites – and it’s his third recording of what cellists call their “bible.”

Now 62, he’s been playing these solo suites for 58 years, and this third venture was launched because there’s always something new to find in any important piece of music. What did he do differently this time? He maintained a framework of spontaneity throughout the recording process, because that’s when something fresh can show its musical face at any time.

The other reason for this Bach with Yo-Yo party: He’s one of the nicest people in the musical world. Kind, caring, compassionate, genuinely interested in you, me and the entire world. The fact that his playing is extraordinary is important as well. Yo-Yo Ma proves you can have it both ways.

Hear his performance and interview on SiriusXM Symphony Hall (Ch. 76) when it premieres August 17 at 6 pm ET with replays August 18 at 11 am ET, August 19 at 11 pm ET and August 21 at 11 am ET. The session will also be available ON DEMAND.
