Big performances are certainly nice in fantasy football, but consistency is nicer. You’d prefer to know you’re going to get 16 points every week from that running back, rather than hope for three 30-point outbursts and a bunch of eight-point duds. (Remember: You do not want to chase points!)

Two of fantasy football’s most inconsistent contributors this year have been Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman. Ryan averaged 25.9 points in his first three games, and 20.1 in his last three; Edelman averaged 19.2 points in his first three games, and 11.3 since.

Wednesday on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio, Ray Flowers and Kyle Elfrink tried to make sense of which Matt Ryan and which Julian Edelman we should expect to see the rest of the season.

Matt Ryan: Somewhere in between

“Go right in the middle,” Flowers said. “I’m gonna do that with Matt Ryan because that’s what I believe. I don’t think that Ryan is either one of those guys … It’s been uneven. If I had to choose one or the other, I’d say the first three weeks, but that’s a really high bar.”

Julian Edelman: Closer to the last three weeks

“Well, last year, he averaged 15.7 points in a PPR setup which is right where we are right now, so again, kind of even. If I had to choose one of the two sides, I would choose the guy we have seen recently, because we know Edelman is not a touchdown producer,” Flowers said. “And as the Patriots get healthy (Gronkowski), as they start to integrate Tim Wright, and they try to establish something outside whether it’s Dobson or Tyms or Amendola or someone, I just think that Edelman is a chain mover. Edelman is your quintessential 14-points-a-week guy.”
