Eagles’ Jason Kelce ‘really, really happy’ for Carson Wentz

For Jason Kelce, having those familiar hands under his butt Sunday meant all was right with the world. Not that the Philadelphia Eagles center had any problem with Nick Foles as the team’s quarterback. But Carson Wentz’s return to his starting spot after suffering a torn ACL late last season was something to celebrate, along with the Eagles’ 20-16 victory against the Indianapolis Colts.

‘He’s such a hard worker, he’s such a dynamic personality’

“Carson, he’s a special player, man,” Kelce told Bruce Murray and Brady Quinn on the SiriusXM Blitz. “I haven’t been through an ACL rehab myself, I can’t imagine (what he went through). I think, obviously, he’s happy for everybody with last year winning the Super Bowl, happy that we were able to get that done. But having to sit on the sidelines for that … a guy that’s as competitive as he is, and then obviously having the grueling rehab to go through every single day trying to get back, trying to hit certain checkpoints to make sure that you’re ready to go, I was really, really happy for him to be back out on that field.

“He’s such a hard worker, he’s such a dynamic personality that has been felt the moment he was drafted to Philadelphia.”

‘I think the coaches did a good job of giving both quarterbacks reps in practice’

Given his position, Kelce would figure to have faced a greater challenge than other members of the offense in dealing with the uncertainty at quarterback through the offseason, preseason, and the first two regular-season games. But he handled it just fine.

“You realize it’s out of your hands,” Kelce said. “I think the coaches did a good job of giving both quarterbacks reps in practice. Obviously, Carson was limited from certain situations throughout practice. But the benefit for us was that we were returning a lot of offensive players. We’ve worked with both quarterbacks extensively I’ve played a lot of games with Nick Foles and a lot of games with Carson Wentz, so I don’t think it affected it too much, to be quite honest. It might be different if this was a guy who we didn’t just win a Super Bowl with and hadn’t played a lot of games with.

‘I don’t know how many other teams across the league lose their starting quarterback and their backup goes in there and wins a Super Bowl for them’

“We’re pretty fortunate to have two quarterbacks the way that we do. I don’t know how many other teams across the league lose their starting quarterback and their backup goes in there and wins a Super Bowl for them. I think that’s a pretty remarkable feat to have a guy like Nick be able to step in there to play the way he plays. To have both of those guys, that’s a big reason why we had so much success.”
