Fresh off leading the U.S. Men’s National Team to a gold medal at the World Cup, Mike Krzyzewski tipped off his 10th season as host of Basketball and Beyond on SiriusXM College Sports Nation. Every Thursday at 6 pm ET, Coach K talks about the latest news in college and pro basketball, plus touches on a wide array of subjects, interviewing successful people from sports, entertainment, government and more.

Krzyzewski has been involved with USA Basketball since 1979. In that time, Coach K has helped lead the U.S. to 10 gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals in international competition.

Kenneth Faried, Denver Nuggets forward and member of the Team USA group that won gold medal in Spain this summer, joined Coach K on the season premiere to talk about his experience with the team. With bigger stars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook absent for various reasons and the late injury to Paul George during a Team USA scrimmage, Faried had to talk on a new leadership role.

Faried talked to Coach K about changing his mindset from competing against Steph Curry, James Harden and Kyrie Irving to playing with them.

It was a fun experience. Playing with Kyrie it was different because he’s quick with agility. You screen for him, watch him get in the lane and his finishing game is crazy. With Steph, my second year playing him in the playoffs we had a bit of a disagreement because they beat us and he went off on us but playing with him was a great experience. He can really shoot it and light it up.

This week, Coach K also begins preparation for the new college basketball season with the Duke Blue Devils. Krzyzewski talked about the expectations heading into the season and who the best players on his team are.

“We have really good talent and four outstanding freshmen,” Coach K said. “A lot of the buildup is for our freshmen class. We have good veterans coming back but our best players are the four freshmen.”

“When you look at the rest of the country, there’s some really experienced teams,” Krzyzewski said. “But then Kansas will be a little more like us, relying on the young guys.”

Bill Self, Kansas head coach, also joined the show and talked about his freshmen leaders with Krzyzewski.

We brought in a couple of Marines with something called “The Program,” and those guys evaluated the team, put them through different teamwork activities that were both physically and mentally draining to see who would rise above. Two of our three leaders were freshmen and our third leader is a sophomore. We love to say we have experienced leadership, but this team, we have to get it from somewhere else.
