When the Minnesota Vikings signed Case Keenum during the offseason, they were expecting him to be a solid backup quarterback.

They ended up getting so much more.

‘When you’re around the guy, what you see is what you get on game day’

Since taking over as the Vikings’ starter in the second week of the season, replacing injured Sam Bradford, Keenum has been sensational in starting nine of 10 games. Keenum has thrown for 2,476 yards and 14 touchdowns with five interceptions.

“We brought him in because we thought he could really help us if he had to play,” Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur told Alex Marvez and Bill Polian on Late Hits. “When you’re around the guy, what you see is what you get on game day. He’s super competitive, extremely accurate. He throws a real friendly ball, one that our receivers can catch consistently.

‘I’ll give him credit: he goes out there and he just lets it rip’

“His preparation’s outstanding, so he goes into the game really, really prepared, and he’s got a real awareness of what we want to do on offense. And then I’ll give him credit: he goes out there and he just lets it rip. And the players around him are playing hard, so we don’t want to mess with that.”

For the most part, the Vikings’ coaches have handled Keenum exceptionally well. And that, according to Shurmur, is the result of a strong group effort.

‘I quickly developed a pretty good feel for the things that Case was good at and we try to give him those things’

“I think we’ve got a really good group of coaches here,” Keenum said. “I quickly developed a pretty good feel for the things that Case was good at and we try to give him those things. And he’s been rewarding us with good play.”
