Broadway Buzz with Julie James: Bridges of Madison County hits the stage!

Helloooo B-way lovin’ peeps! Here’s a quick snapshot of theatre news this week:

We got a theatre location and opening date for The Bridges of Madison County! Previews begin January 13, 2014 with an official opening on February 27 at The Schoenfeld. Following a sold-out run at The Williamstown Theatre Company, the show stars four-time Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara (Nice Work, Pajama Game), and stage and screen star Steven Pasquale (Reasons to Be Pretty, TV’s Rescue Me) with a score by Tony winner Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Last Five Years) and book by Tony & Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman (‘night Mother, Color Purple, Secret Garden) and direction by Bartlett Scherr (who reunites with O’Hara, having directed South Pacific & Light in the Piazza).

We got the first announcement of a new play, Mothers and Sons, slated for Broadway Spring 2014. Written by four-time Tony winning playwright Terrence McNally,  with Emmy and Tony winner Tyne Daly set to star. The show tells the story of a mother who, 20 years following the death of her son, turns up at the door of his lover, now married to another man and with a young son. The new play marks McNally’s 20th Broadway production, including Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Master Class, Ragtime, The Full Monty and many more.

The August 15 performance of Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark had to be halted near the top of Act II due to an onstage injury, eventually causing the rest of the show to be cancelled and audiences sent home. The actor, Daniel Curry, sustained a leg injury and was hospitalized. Representatives for the show stated that there was no equipment failure or malfunction and the production resumed the following evening as scheduled. Watch this news report where yours truly was asked to comment on the developing story.

I love a “shomance,” and American Idol stars/married couple Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young, who met during the 2009 revival of Hair will be hitting the road together to lead the cast of a new touring production of Lloyd Webber/Rice’s Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, launching March 2014! Incidentally, DeGarmo was the first Idol alum to star on Broadway. The tour will announce full cities and casting soon – let me know if you plan to see them in your neck of the world!

Three-time Tony nominee Rebecca Luker will be Fairy Godmothering Cinderella at The Broadway Theatre from September 6 through January 19, 2014. Current Godmother (did you know her character’s name is actually Marie?) Victoria Clark is on a temporary leave for a new, yet-to-be-announced project and plans to return to the musical January 21.

That’s what’s happening On Broadway – catch ya on the airwaves!
