Brady Quinn: Packers’ next GM’s responsibility is ‘building back up’ roster

The task won’t be easy.

Ted Thompson’s exit as general manager of the Green Bay Packers has created an opportunity for someone to overhaul a team that, with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, still very much has a chance to be a contender.

‘I think that’s something that they need to do and utilize while they have Aaron Rodgers still in his prime’

As Brady Quinn pointed out while co-hosting with Bruce Murray on the SiriusXM Blitz, the Packers have holes that were created on Thompson’s watch.

“I would think that whoever comes in next, that’s going to be his responsibility, is building back up this roster to make it one that can contend for a Super Bowl,” Quinn said. “And I think that’s something that they need to do and utilize while they have Aaron Rodgers still in his prime.

‘You’ve got to go back and look at the job that (Thompson’s) done, really trying to fill some of the pieces that they’ve let go’

“They’ve built through the draft. They don’t make a ton of splashes in free agency, and I think what you have to do is you’ve got to go back and look at the job that (Thompson’s) done, really trying to fill some of the pieces that they’ve let go into free agency and that they’ve let go in past years.”

Quinn noted that Thompson deserves credit for the team drafting Rodgers as the replacement for Brett Favre. “But at the same time, you’re going to look at how he’s built around Aaron Rodgers to try to help him try to win that Super Bowl and to give him (help) …,” Quinn said.
