Jerry Hughes’ top priority this offseason was to make sure he resolved “hamstring issues” that bothered him in 2016.

The Buffalo Bills’ defensive end invested plenty of time and energy getting his body ready to handle the rigors of the upcoming season. And it apparently paid off, as Hughes drew high praise from new Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier for all of that hard work.

‘I really wanted to kind of come in early in the offseason and nip that in the bud quickly’

“Last year just being banged up as the season got long, dealt with some hamstring issues,” Hughes told Alex Marvez and Bill Polian on Late Hits. “I really wanted to kind of come in early in the offseason and nip that in the bud quickly so that way, I can go out there this fall and perform at high level like I know I can.”

After having a combined 11 sacks the past two seasons, the Bills are counting on him to return to the form he had with back-to-back 10-sack campaigns in 2013 and 2014. Hughes is looking forward to the more straightforward scheme that Frazier and coach Sean McDermott have installed in place of the more complicated defense Rex Ryan ran in 2015 and 2016.

‘Night and day just on how very detail-oriented they are’

Hughes also says there has been a dramatic shift in culture since the arrival of McDermott and his coaching staff.

“Night and day just on how very detail-oriented they are, starting Day One when we walked into the building,” Hughes said. “‘One Eleven’ was on the doors as we walked into our locker room, so you knew from then on that he’s going to be someone who’s going to hold his details high, but at the same time keep you in the same perspective. And that goes the same for Coach Frazier as he’s been instilling the defense in us.

“He’s sitting on some little tidbits that you wouldn’t really think of as a player, but it’s great knowledge to have as we’re putting it down in our notebooks for the spring.”
