Alabama Crimson Tide 2014 camp tour report from SiriusXM College Sports Nation

SiriusXM College Sports Nation’s third annual college football camp tour continued on Tuesday, Aug. 19th, as Jack Arute and Phil Savage visited the University of Alabama and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Alabama Crimson Tide season preview

Even heading into the first game of the season, head coach Nick Saban will not name a starting quarterback. The Blake Sims vs. Jacob Coker competition is a story line that may play out as the season develops. The same day Arute and Savage visited the Alabama camp, Ohio State’s Braxton Miller went down with a season-ending injury. Arute talked about why Alabama having two quarterbacks may not necessarily be a bad thing.

“It is extremely critical to make sure you’ve got two guys on your roster that totally embrace and understand,” Arute said. “Even if their execution may be a tad different … have them there.”

Savage talked about the recent history of strong Alabama quarterbacks.

Alabama has been extremely fortunate since Nick Saban came here. They had John Parker Wilson for two years who did not miss a game, Greg McElroy for two years who did not miss a game and then AJ McCarron for three seasons who did not miss a game. So they have not had to go to the 1-B. But this is a completely different dynamic with Jacob Coker transferring in from Florida State after spring football and then Blake Sims, who has been here for five years, has a redshirt, a combination running back/quarterback initially and I think because he was the main quarterback in spring football, he has really elevated and raised his game. He has made it more of a competition than many felt would be the case.
