St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright was named to his second All-Star Game this season. However, Wainwright is scheduled to pitch the Sunday prior to the game, leaving his availability to pitch up in the air. And while he wouldn’t take his name off the roster just yet in case the Cardinals’ game is rained out Sunday, he did say he would immediately give up his spot on the roster to closer Edward Mujica.

“What I would like to see, though, and I’ll go ahead and go on the record and say I would not pitch in the game for sure, if Edward Mujica could make that team in my place,” Wainwright said on MLB Network Radio. “I think he’s deserving of it, he’s like 23 or 24 for 25 in save opportunities, he’s been dynamite for us when our closer was hurt in spring training [. . .] Muji’s come in and been the backbone of our bullpen.”

Mujica, 29, is in his first season as a primary closer in the majors. He has totaled 24 saves in 38 games for St. Louis, and has 33 strikeouts and a 2.39 ERA in 37 2/3 innings pitched.

Wainwright also spoke on SiriusXM about whether New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey should get the start for the National League in his home ballpark, Citi Field.
