Opera lovers rejoice and raise your voices! SiriusXM announced that Metropolitan Opera Radio is launching a new season with a fresh lineup of performances on Monday, September 26. Met Opera Radio (Ch. 74) is the definitive radio channel for opera lovers, featuring exclusive live broadcasts of Met performances each week during the 2016-17 season.
The 11th season kicks off Monday at 4:30 p.m. ET with the Opening Night Gala at the Metropolitan Opera and an exclusive live broadcast of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, starring Nina Stemme & Stuart Skelton in the title roles, with Rene Pape, Ekatrinia Gubanova, and Evgeny Nikintin, conducted by Simon Rattle making a rare Met appearance. The brand new season will be filled with five other new productions and 20 revivals, popular favorites and rarities alike, with up to 3 performances a week heard live on Met Opera Radio
Among those featured will be Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, starring Renee Fleming in her signature role as the Beautiful Marschallin.
“I love this role, she has such depth and she’s such an extraordinarily complex women, unlike most of the repertoire I’ve been able to sing in for most of my career,” Fleming said in an exclusive interview with Met Opera Radio.
Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin will be coming to the Met this spring. Russian soprano Anna Netrebko, who stars as Tatiana, joined Met Opera Radio to discuss her character’s pivotal scene in which she pours her heart out to a glamorous stranger in a letter.
“I’m the person who’s used to [having] attention and Tatiana is opposite, she’s kind of like a part of the furniture,” Netrebko said. “I think all her thoughts and feelings, it was about dreams about something very pure and beautiful.”
