Former Republican presidential candidate Senator Rand Paul weighed in on the state of the presidential race during an interview with Michael Steele and Rick Ungar on Thursday.

“The race is really much tighter than I thought it would be,” Paul admitted.

The senator cites the “great deal of distrust” directed toward Hillary Clinton as the rationale for a potential Donald Trump victory in the November general election.

“Over 50 percent of people distrust her, they think she’s, you know, has basically ill gotten gains from her and Bill selling themselves to give speeches around the world.”

He added, “I think that’s why the health thing has become such a big deal for her.”

After taking some time off to recover from pneumonia, Clinton returned to the campaign trail on Thursday speaking in both Greensboro, N.C. and Washington, D.C. Her campaign is trying to pick up new momentum after a newly released CBS/New York Times poll shows the race tightening.

“I think it still is anybody’s game,” Paul concluded.
