An American national treasure and one of Brooklyn’s finest, Barbra Streisand has earned a lifetime of happy birthdays for entertaining the world through song and the silver screen. This year’s 74th birthday puts her close to a major milestone, adding to a collection of Olympic-level achievements.
Her 2014 album Partners was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales in excess of one million copies. Her 34th studio album, it was also her 31st Platinum full-length release — and the latest major score in a career full of milestones and accolades.
One of the best-selling artists of all time, she’s sold more than 145 million records worldwide and has the most number one albums of any woman. Her concerts have similarly shattered box office records and made her one of the most in-demand live performers to have ever drawn breath. She has enjoyed an extraordinary longevity in music, topping the charts in each of the past six decades. Her span of hits is unprecedented and is not likely to ever be duplicated.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg of her formidable talents — triple threats must bow down to the OG Quintuple Threat, the only woman to win Grammy, Oscar, Golden Globe, Emmy, Tony and Director’s Guild Awards. Her personal philanthropic efforts as well as those of her Streisand Foundation have raised millions to protect civil liberties, women’s issues and more. Her memoirs are scheduled to be published by Viking in 2017, when she’ll be 75-years-old. It will probably have to weigh about 50 pounds to pack in all the life and impact she’s had in three-quarters of a century.
Happy Birthday to the woman who has set a high bar for excellence, fun and grace!
