With the new, fully authorized documentary, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, premiering at Sundance last month, and his birthday just around the corner (he would have turned 48 on Feb. 20), Kurt Cobain’s been on the zeitgeist’s mind lately. In fact, even his old credit card just went up for auction. But we think there’s no better way to honor the late musician than with a powerful cover from a contemporary band.

Father John Misty came into the SiriusXMU studios last week and did just that. If you were a Nirvana fan back in the day, this cover of Heart-Shaped Box will bring you back to the ’90s like one of those weird movie flashbacks. And if you’re just meeting Nirvana for the first time, here is a glimpse of Kurt Cobain’s greatness.

Lithium, Ch. 34, is also celebrating the anniversary of Cobain’s birthday with a mix of songs from Bleach, Nevermind, In Utero, With the Lights Out, MTV Unplugged and Live & Loud at Reading throughout the day.
