Randi Zuckerberg and guests ‘like’ and ‘dislike’ new apps

July 30, 2014

Randi Zuckerberg’s Dot Complicated airs Wednesdays at noon ET on Business Radio.

Remember when you had one phone in your entire house and only your rich neighbor owned a computer … which ran exclusively in DOS!? You may not be old enough (we are), but it was a different world back then.

On the flip side, the list of pros in today’s tech saturated world is indeed long, but there are a lot of down sides to always being plugged in. Randi Zuckerberg, media executive and New York Times best-selling author, has come to the rescue. She recently joined SiriusXM’s Business Radio with her new show, Dot Complicated, to help us learn how to handle tech and not be handled by it.

Every Wednesday at noon, Randi and guests explore how technology and social media overwhelms–and sometimes controls–peoples’ lives, giving insight into the latest high tech innovations for kids, parents and even pets, and helping us figure out which are worth it and which aren’t.

During her premiere show on 7/23, Randi was joined by guests Clara Shih, CEO of Hearsay Social and author of The Facebook Era, Jacqui Boland, founder of Red Tricycle, and Lara Setrakian, creator and executive editor of the news site Syria Deeply.

First off, Shih shared her top social media faux pas in business. So what social media habit drives her the craziest? “Signing up for social and then not doing anything.”

Randi also played “Like or Dislike” with her guests, during which they all gave their opinions on new apps or other current events/stories in tech.

For instance, Randi asked about new app that ginger.io developed, which “analyzes your smart phone behavior for depression and mental health issues.” It measures these things by “taking into account below average levels of messaging, so less human contact. Less movement … and it reminds you to seek out human contact if you haven’t talked to anyone all day.”

Finally, Randi asks her three guests about their favorite apps.

1) Clara can’t live without Gmail, Instagram and Facebook. “And last but not least, obviously the new Hearsay iPhone application.”

2) Jacqui’s go-to app every morning when she wakes up is Facebook, she loves LiveHealth Online because of her busy travel schedule, and she is very excited about the Red Tricycle app launching in a couple of weeks.

3) Lara is self-proclaimed subway girl so she says her favorite app is without a doubt HopStop.
