Ian Ziering thought Sharknado was gonna bite

July 30, 2014

You may know him from Beverly Hills 90210, but Ian Ziering is back on the scene promoting his new cult made-for-TV movie Sharknado 2: The Second One, which premieres tonight at 9 pm ET on SyFy. Ziering stopped by SiriusXM’s Stars to talk with Taylor and Kenny about it the follow-up to last summer’s surprise hit, in which he plays Fin Shepard, the only man who can save New York City from (dun dun dun!!!!) The Sharknado.

“I thought it was gonna be a big sleeper. Honestly, I had no idea what was coming down the pipe for me. Sharknado had a huge potential to be a massive stinker … So I didn’t really talk about it because I figured it would just stay under the radar. I didn’t know this would be a Sharknado!”

But, we mean, come on. A movie like Sharknado should’ve been a flop, no? So what happened!?

“It exploded. I ended up doing press for about five months after that movie aired. It premiered one after another, [but] Sharknado 2 is going to air within 24 hours in 90 countries around the world, [so] I think the nerds over there at Twitter better shore up their hard drives because if they didn’t break last time we’re going to explode them this time … It aired three times and every time it aired, the ratings went up, which is unheard of! To the point where they made what’s called a fathom event out of it and brought it to movie theaters for a midnight showing!”

And even better? Ziering revealed that Sharknado 3 has even been given the green light. Listen to his whole interview below.
