If you were in Rockefeller Plaza this morning, you might’ve known that “Boy Band of the Moment” 5 Seconds of Summer visited the Today Show to promote their debut, self-titled album. Hundreds of excited young girls responded in kind by camping out and gathering in the Plaza (and outside the SiriusXM building) in hopes of catching a glimpse of the pop-punk outfit. But here’s the best part: 5 Seconds of Summer, who performed She Looks So Perfect for the Today Show, inspired the Today Show cast to tell Today Show Radio who their favorite boy band were when they were teenagers!
To begin, Jess chose a specific ‘boy’ over a ‘band': Shaun Cassidy! “Not David Cassidy. The younger brother was my year of being 13.”
Meanwhile, Kathie Lee said, “My boy band obviously was The Beatles in the early 1960s, and then it morphed into Deno, Desi and Billy. Deno was the son of Dean Martin — gorgeous guy. Desi was the son of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and Billy was somehow weirdly related to somebody in the Beach Boys.” But unlike the hoards of screaming 5 Seconds of Summer fans, Kathie Lee said she would not have camped out all night for her boy bands, “Barbra Streisand, maybe years later.”
Hoda took the opportunity to comment on 5 Seconds of Summer: “There’s something infectious about these guys. In fact, the very first time I went to SiriusXM, I walked in and there were thousands of kids outside and I go, What’s going on? And they go, 5 Seconds of Summer! So I came over to the plaza and tell the guys we gotta book 5 Seconds of Summer. I don’t even know who they are, but they got a gazillion kids at SiriusXM!” When asked about her favorite boy band, Hoda admitted “I guess it was the Jackson 5, I don’t know! … Maybe the Bee Gees!”
Natalie said her boy band was “probably Menudo, I think they were one of the originals, at least for my generation!”
Savannah liked Duran Duran. “Every corner of my wall at 13 was covered with Duran Duran posters.”
Matt Lauer’s favorite boy band (if you could call them that) was the Rolling Stones. But Kathie Lee disagreed. “They’re my least favorite band ever, in all of life.”
Willie Geist was into “New Edition where Bobby Brown started. Oh my gosh, Mr. Telephone Man — that was my jam right there. I used to love them, and then when I got older my guilty pleasure was New Kids on the Block.”
Tune in with Savannah, Matt, Natalie, Tamron, Al, Hoda, Kathie Lee, Carson and the rest of the TODAY crew with you in the car, on your phone and to work on SiriusXM Today Show Radio, Channel 108.
