If you keep up with the fashion world, then you might be aware that the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Fashion Awards took place yesterday at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center in NYC.

But the night wasn’t just about Rihanna’s see-through dress. The CFDA officially honors excellence in womenswear, menswear, and accessories, not to mention successes in journalism, creative vision, and lifetime achievement.

On hand to cover the CFDA Awards, Fashion Insiders host Fern Mallis talked to some of the night’s most influential nominees, designers, and guests, or, as she so succinctly put it: “the core and the heart and soul of the fashion industry.”

Since “everybody is talking about menswear,” Mallis asked nominees Todd Snyder and Tim Coppens about what it meant for them to be nominated for such an important award. In response, Coppens described how it “meant a lot” to be nominated. Snyder agreed: “The nomination in its self is just well worth it.”

Later, Mallis asked nominees Marc Alary, Irene Neuwirth, and Jennifer Fisher about how they started out in the accessory industry. In response, Fisher described how her company started by accident: “After I got married, I had a hard time having a child. When my son was born, I was trying to find a piece of jewelry that could represent my personal style that could also represent my child, so I went and had it made.. I went out on there on 47th street and knocked on doors until someone would make what I wanted.”

Indeed, the beginning of Fisher’s company revolved around the jewelry she made for her son: charmed jewelry representing your family and the people you love.

Mallis also asked womenswear nominees Shane Gabier and Christophe Peters of Creatures of the Wind as well as Wes Gordon about the inspirations behind their collections. Gabier and Peters explained how they uniquely “try to find a tangible representation of an idea or emotion or atmosphere.” Gordon’s described the importance of passion: “The only reason to work in this industry is because you absolutely love it and are so passionate about it. Then you can overlook all the craziness.”
