NFL Draft 2014: SiriusXM Sports’ first round recap

May 9, 2014

One of the most intriguing draft classes in recent memory made for an exciting Day 1 of the 2014 NFL Draft on Thursday.

Parts of the first round went to plan. Jadeveon Clowney was selected first overall by the Houston Texans, two wide receivers (Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans) were among the first 10 selections, Khalil Mack was drafted in the top five, and Teddy Bridgewater didn’t have to wait multiple days to learn his fate, selected with the last pick Thursday by the Minnesota Vikings.

Still, parts of the first round – as tends to happen at the NFL Draft – took everyone by surprise. Blake Bortles was the first quarterback off the board, drafted third overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Cleveland Browns made three trades – two in the first half of the draft, and one in the second half. And one of those trades, which resulted in the Browns jumping from the 26th overall pick to the 22nd overall pick, put an end to the day’s most dramatic story line: Where Johnny Manziel would wind up. Manziel, a projected top 5 pick by some analysts, wasn’t taken until that No. 22 pick by the Browns, three hours after the draft kicked off.
