The Houston Texans are stuck. That’s what SiriusXM football analyst Phil Savage said Wednesday on Bleacher Report Radio.
The Texans own the No. 1 pick in the draft, a spot where most analysts believe Jadeveon Clowney should be selected. But according to Savage, Clowney doesn’t fit in Houston’s defensive scheme.
“Jadeveon Clowney, at least in my opinion, is an ideal fit as a 4-3 defensive end. They’re going to run a 3-4 defense. So you’re trying to fit a square peg in a round hole,” Savage said. “If you have him drop one time in pass coverage, that’s one less rep he’ll get as a pass rusher, which is his strength.”
That means the Texans have to turn to Buffalo, and linebacker Khalil Mack.
“I think the Texans have desperately tried to trade out of this, and have at least made a lot of calls over the last few weeks,” Savage said. “But I don’t think anybody’s gonna move. I think they’re stuck, and ultimately they are going to take Khalil Mack.”
Savage added that he doesn’t think Clowney will fall any further than No. 3, where the Jacksonville Jaguars are set to pick.
