Bryce Harper may have been benched on Saturday for lack of hustle (which made the Nats game program rather ironic), but for Nationals manager Matt Williams, it ends there.
Williams joined First Pitch with Jim Memolo and Todd Hollandsworth on Wednesday, and said while Harper simply broke a team pact on that play, he is a de facto leader for the club, and his electric style helps the team win.
We made this agreement as a team that we would do the things that we needed to do on an everyday basis to give ourselves the best chance, and he didn’t give us that chance that day […] Bryce is one of our leaders. When he plays with intensity and fire, the way he knows how to play the game, the way he does it 99 percent of the time, that helps us, and that’s all we ask from him and that’s all he asks from himself.
