Basketball and Beyond: Coach K’s keys to NCAA tournament success

As Duke University’s Mike Krzyzewski heads into his 30th tournament as a head coach, he discussed the 68 team field on Basketball and Beyond.

“The selection process was a tough one I think this year,” Coach K said. “not in who made it but how you’re seeded.”

The top seeds, however, were a no-brainer for Krzyzewski.

“It was to me very obvious that Florida and Wichita State and Arizona would get (No. 1 seeds). And Virginia earned it, winning the ACC regular season and the tournament.”

Coach K and the Blue Devils earned at No. 3 seed in the Midwest region but Krzyzewski offered a change to the selection process.

“They do a great job, the committee,” Coach K said, “I just wish there were a couple former basketball coaches, not vote, but could look at (the bracket) before it’s put out to give it an eye test. I think that would help an already really good selection process even better.”

Krzyzewski has four national championships to his name and he discussed the strengths of the four No. 1 seeds in this year’s tournament.

When I look at Florida’s team, they have depth and they have guard play. Wichita State has a great point guard. Virginia has really good guard play and depth. What Sean Miller has added to his team is a great point guard. So that consistency of the top four teams playing at such a high level. They have people who are in control of the game over the entire time. They don’t make many mistakes, mental or physical. That’s an advantage. When we’ve won our four national championships, our guard play was sensational. To me that’s one of the things I’ll watch as the tournament goes on.
