Doug McDermott has Coach K’s attention.
Last week on Mad Dog Sports Radio, Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski gave a little NCAA Tournament preview to Chris “Mad Dog” Russo. According to Krzyzewski – who also hosts his own show, Basketball and Beyond, on SiriusXM – the Creighton Blue Jays, currently ranked ninth in the AP men’s basketball poll, is one team every program will look to avoid in March.
I think it’s more wide open than ever. You talk about [Doug] McDermott, McDermott really is as good a player as there is in college basketball. And he’s consistently excellent. It’s not about potential – he’s doing it [...] He worked out in our camp for USA basketball, he and Marcus Smart, for five days over the summer, and he fit in really well. He’s just an outstanding player. Nobody will want to play Creighton in the Tournament. Nobody.
Kryzyzewski sat down with Russo just hours before his Blue Devils knocked off one of their new conference foes, Syracuse. According to Coach K, the conference’s new look – which, by next year, will also include the additions of Louisville, Pitt and Notre Dame – is exciting, and a big win for the ACC.
“I think the ACC won the lottery in getting Syracuse, Pitt, Notre Dame and Louisville for next year,” Krzyzewski said. “I’m saddened that Maryland’s not going to be with us because that would’ve made the conference even greater. I think Maryland basketball has been great for our conference, and I’ve been outspoken about wanting them to stay. I think that’s a big mistake, but that’s the way it goes. The thing is, the ACC, when you go into next year, will have added four of the best programs in the United States. Syracuse, one of the all-time programs. Louisville, Pitt – over the last decade has won the top 10 in number of games.”
