Adam Vinatieri: Kickers are the NFL’s version of a closer

January 30, 2014

Adam Vinatieri, arguably the best kicker in the history of the NFL – take his two Super Bowl-winning field goals, for example – appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio Wednesday at Radio Row.

SiriusXM Blitz hosts Rich Gannon and Bruce Murray asked Vinatieri to explain what goes through a kicker’s head when they line up behind center.

“I try not to think of the significance of certain moments,” Vinatieri said. “I always kind of think I’m the closing pitcher of a baseball team. Everybody plays for 8 1/2 innings, and the guy’s gotta come in and throw three outs and walk off the field. So for me, I know what my role is – I gotta step on the field three-to-10 times a game, and you better make every single one of ‘em count.”
