This Week’s Hits 1 Picks: Aloe Blacc, Chris Wallace, Karmin + more

January 17, 2014

Written by Hits 1′s Kid Kelly

Hey there. I’m Kid Kelly of SiriusXM Hits 1 — you might know me from my work with Mikey Piff (aka the Tony Stark of radio). When I’m not spinning tracks by Top 40 hit-makers like the all-knowing Beyonce, Maroon 5, Flo Rida, fun., P!nk, and One Direction, I spend a lot of my free time making eggs, BBQ-ing, hitting the gym, and wondering just what it is the fox says.

I also spend a lot of time seeking out awesome up-and-coming acts to add to my ever-evolving playlist; here’s what’s currently ruling the decks at Hits 1.

Aloe Blacc

Aloe Blacc — The Man (Interscope)
We played Aloe Black a few years ago when no one really knew him; we played a song called I Need A Dollar, which later accompanied the opening sequence to that HBO show How To Make It In America. Up until then, Aloe only had something of an internet cult following, but he really hit it big after nabbing HBO. Anyway, The Man will be the third Aloe Blacc song we’ve played so far. (Remember: He’s the voice in the Avicii song, Wake Me Up.) We like to find stuff that we feel would resonate with the audience on Hits 1, but is also unique enough that has a little something about it. We definitely thought Aloe’s The Man had some interest to it.

Chris Wallace

Chris Wallace — Keep Me Crazy (ThinkSay)
Adding Chris Wallace, who used to play in the band White Tie Affair, was something of a gut call. We think it sounds like a pop song and hit, but we’re also taking a chance on an unknown artist. Keep me Crazy sounds like it could be a Top 40 pop hit.

Karmin

Karmin — I Want It All (Epic)

Karmin are an awesome duo AND future husband and wife. We were pretty much the first station to play Karmin before anyone else played them, and we’ve supported all of their pop releases since. They’re great artists, a great couple, and great folks. We were actually given the official Epic Records radio premiere to I Want It All, which we’re going to start playing on Hit-Bound this coming weekend (hosted by the Tony stark of radio: Mikey Piff).

Oh Honey

Oh Honey — Be Okay (Independent)

In the case of this Brooklyn folk-pop act, we’re giving an unknown band a complete shot, simply for the fact that we think people who listen to Hits 1 would like them. Be Okay is a unique song for Top 40, and, as curators, we thought it would be cool to play it. They’re an unsigned band, but I’m pretty sure they’ll be signed by some medium-to-large label in the next 30 days based on our airplay.
