With the Sochi Olympics just around the corner, gold medal Olympic diver Greg Louganis, stopped by the Derek & Romaine show last week to talk about an event he knows far too well about, he also discussed an issue that’s close to his heart: LGBT rights.

Less than a month away from the Winter Olympics, LGBT issues are a hot topic in a seemingly anti-gay Russia. Bringing these issues to the forefront, Louganis recently spoke at a congressional briefing regarding the defense of LGBT rights within the Olympics. Connecting with “allies” overseas, he also chatted with LGBT leaders and activists in Russia.

“I joined up with Athlete Ally and All Out sports which is really about encouraging our allies to speak up and speak out, so that we have a much stronger voice,” Louganis said. “Clearly with the laws that were passed in Russia, they clearly are discriminatory. The horrific things that are happening in light of those laws is just horrendous.”

For more on the state of LGBT affairs in this year’s Olympic home, Russia, tune in as Derek Hartley gives an inside look on these winter games. The show will discuss what it’s like to be a gay American athlete and what it means to be ‘out’ in front of a worldwide audience. Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black and Louganis rejoins us to share their thoughts.
