Host-to-Host: Pete Dominick interviews Taylor Strecker

“Hey boy, hey!”

No, this isn’t a remix of your typical Ryan Gosling meme, it’s just our very own SiriusXM Stars host Taylor Strecker’s signature greeting.

Strecker visited Indie‘s Stand  Up! with Pete Dominick for his special host-to-host series to chat about everything from women’s roles in the media, to porn and her odd nighttime routine, giving us an inside view of her own personal life and her SiriusXM Stars show Wake Up! with Taylor.

So what does Strecker have to say about her show? To her it’s a very real, very intimate take on daily happenings from a modern woman’s perspective.

“I don’t want to sound cliché, but I feel like it is a safe space for women to go,” Stecker said. “It’s just a real-ass discussion among women. I’m not going to bullshit you… so if you are feeling kind of crappy and you want a little dose of reality, come to me, because I’m not going to make you feel bad about your life.”

How did the SiriusXM Stars host get her start in radio? Turns out the then recently graduated Strecker was actually roommates with the Morning Mash Up‘s Nicole Ryan. Strecker was working in advertising — which she calls a “boy’s club” — and would visit Ryan (who was working as a receptionist at SiriusXM). Hating her job, Strecker was more than ecstatic when Ryan told her that Cosmo Radio was looking for unknown radio talent. Not having any on-air experience, Strecker credits her communications major and her love of performing with helping her launch her career. She revealed having dreams of being a “big producer” for movies and doing a lot of theater and singing when she was younger.

Strecker admitted that the media world (even radio) is primarily a male-dominated industry when Dominick pointed out that there actually aren’t too many woman-hosted shows and that Strecker stands out for having a show with a female host and male co-host (Kenny Zimlinghau). In Dominick’s opinion, men are so “uncomfortable” with women in leading roles that you don’t see too many females in the spotlight on TV, in stand-up comedy or on the air. “Men don’t like to listen to women or watch women lead or dominate. It makes them, for whatever reason, uncomfortable,” Dominick said.

Because of this, and because of the fact that equality still doesn’t necessarily exist in our society, Strecker identifies herself as a feminist. To her, feminism is all about having the same opportunities as men. “I believe in choice. I don’t believe that as a woman you have to work, or you have to stay at home and raise your kids,” Stecker said. “You deserve the option to do either.”

Speaking of choice, Strecker chooses to not watch any porn… ever. She admitted to actually never watching porn in her life because she not only is petrified that it will make her hate sex, but she also feels sad for the women in the porn industry as they are being objectified. “I think it’s terrible… high-speed internet porn has taken it to a whole new level,” Strecker said. “The problem is that the amount of images people, men and women… are being inundated with, actually create a really, really negative atmosphere for sexual satisfaction in the real realm.”

On the subject of objectification, Strecker gives the example of how Kim Kardashian is being objectified in Kanye West’s recent Bound 2 music video. To Strecker the whole Kardashian-West relationship makes her extremely upset — more upset and vocal than something like politics would make her. To Dominick, the idea that  Kim Kardashian would make Strecker more worked up than serious issues is baffling. He does admit though that he sees a trend in how people tend to be more interested in politics when there are issues at hand that personally involve them.

Speaking of keeping things lighthearted, what is Strecker’s nighttime routine? The SiriusXM Stars host unwinds by the typical: brushing her teeth, popping in a night guard and browsing on her iPad — and the not so typical, like having a scotch in bed, sometimes while wearing her night guard.
