With all the awards children receive nowadays, the trophy industry must be booming! But while business is good, this new positive-reinforcement trend may actually give children the impression that underachieving is good enough.
Ashley Merryman, an advocate against excessive recognition and praise, and author of NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children as well as the recent New York Times Op-Ed piece, Losing is Good For You, says she isn’t against all trophies, just the ones that are unearned. “We haven’t taught them about effort. We haven’t taught them about resilience and strength; so they just sort of collapse.”
