Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron wasn’t taking a shot at friend and fellow quarterback Johnny Manziel with an ESPYs-related tweet Wednesday night, he told SiriusXM College Sports Nation at SEC Media Day.
The timing of McCarron’s tweet coincided with Manziel’s appearance at the ESPN awards show in Los Angeles. However, McCarron clarified, it had nothing to do with Manziel, and should have been taken at face value.
“That wasn’t a shot at him at all,” McCarron told Jack Arute and Rick Neuheisel. “I know some of the media was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe you said that about him!,’ but I’m like, ‘It has nothing to do with him.'”
McCarron also spoke with Arute and Neuheisel about the growing collection of championship hardware he has earned at Alabama, and a bow tie he was wearing in tribute to his cousin, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
